ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis senior designated player Laura Bohning (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol), who tied an NCAA Division I record by hitting two grand slams in the same inning at Rhode Island last Friday, has been named softball co-Player of the Week by the Atlantic 10 Conference for her performance during the week of April 29-May 5.
In five games last week, Bohning batted .412 (7-for-17), hit three home runs (all grand slams), had 14 RBIs and scored six runs. She added a double and three walks, posted a .476 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage, and struck out just once in 21 plate appearances.
In a 21-2 victory at Rhode Island May 3, Bohning became only the fourth player in NCAA Division I history to hit two grand slams in one game, and just the third D-I player with two slams in the same inning, when she connected twice with the bases loaded in a 12-run Billiken seventh. She added a double and an RBI single to finish with SLU single-game records of nine RBIs (also an A-10 season high) and 11 total bases, and she tied school single-game marks for hits (four), runs (four) and at-bats (six).
Bohning provided more heroics May 5 in the regular-season finale at Massachusetts, a game Saint Louis had to win to qualify for the A-10 Championship. She belted her third grand slam of the weekend in the second inning to give the Billikens a 6-1 lead en route to a 12-3, five-inning victory. The blast gave Bohning a school-record 18 career home runs and was her seventh homer this year, tying the Bills' single-season mark.
Bohning has been one of the Billikens' hottest hitters the past month, hitting safely in 16 of 18 games (22-for-57, .386) with five home runs, 22 RBIs, a .448 on-base percentage and just five strikeouts in 68 plate appearances. She raised her season batting average from .212 to .293 during that span. Bohning is tied for the team lead in home runs (seven) and RBIs (29).
