ST. LOUIS - Junior RHP Clay Smith was named the final Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week for the 2013 season, the conference office announced today. It is the second time this season Smith has earned Pitcher of the Week accolades.
A day after Charlotte claimed a share of the A-10 regular season title, Smith threw a complete-game one-hitter against the Niners, giving SLU a chance to earn a share of the regular-season crown. Entering the series, the 49ers were hitting .292 as a team, but Smith held them to a .034 average against him. In conference play this season, Smith has been outstanding, posting a 5-0 record with a 1.88 ERA with 41 strikeouts and nine walks.
Smith and the Billikens have earned the top seed in this week's A-10 tournament. Saint Louis will take on the winner of fourth seeded Xavier and fifth seeded George Washington. The Bills will first play at 9:00 a.m. CT on Thursday, May 23.
