St. Louis - Despite three hits from Nick Becker and two RBIs by Jon Myers, the Saint Louis Billikens dropped a 9-4 decision to George Washington on a sunny Saturday afternoon at The Billiken Sports Center. The Billikens had nine hits but could not prevent the Colonials from winning the first two contests of the three-game series. The finale is scheduled for noon Sunday.
Sparked by a scintillating defensive play by left fielder Cody Cotter in the top of the third inning, the Billikens jumped on top with two runs in the home half of the frame. Cotter sprinted all the way to the fence down the third-base foul line, caught the ball and flipped into the SLU bullpen to end the top of the inning.
Travis Parker walked to start the bottom of the third inning. Marco DiRoma singled through the right side, and Parker dashed to third. Cotter put down a perfect sac bunt to first base to push the Billikens on top 1-0. Becker plated DiRoma with a sharp single to right field as SLU took a 2-0 lead.
GW answered in the top of the fourth when Owen Beightol cleared the bases with a double to the wall and a 3-2 Colonials lead. The Billikens forged a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning on Myers' solo blast over the fence in left center.
The Colonials took advantage of a SLU miscue and strung together three hits to score three unearned runs in the seventh. The Billikens struck back with one run in the bottom of the eighth. Becker smashed a long double to right center, and Myers hit a sharp RBI single through the right side of the GW infield to pull the Billikens to 6-4. The Colonials sealed the win with three runs in the top of the ninth.
The Billikens slide to 25-21, 6-11 in the A-10, while the Colonials improve to 14-32, 6-11 in the conference.
