ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis University field
hockey coach Lauren Bruce today announced
the Billikens' incoming field hockey class. The class is composed of Emily Callahan (St. Louis, Mo./Villa
Duchesne), Haley Chapline (Loveland,
Ohio/Ursuline), Sarah Goings
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson), Laney
Hinkebein (Lousville, Ky./Collegiate), Corinne
Murphy (Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette) and Tori Westhead (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). All begin their four years
of eligibility next fall.
"This is, overall, our most talented recruiting class,"
Bruce said. "They are very skilled, have a lot of hockey experience and most of
them come from really good club teams."
Emily Callahan
(St. Louis, Mo./Villa Duchesne)
The St. Louis
Post-Dispatch tabbed Callahan to their 2011 Second Team Metro League All
Star list. She tallied five goals and six assists for a total of 16 points at
Duchesne in 2011. Callahan piloted the Saints to a 20-4 mark her senior year.
She plays with the AIM Hockey Club.
"Emily is really fast and we'll utilize her speed on the
forward line," Bruce said. "She looks to get really good tips and touches on
net. She's tenacious and a scrappy player and we'll utilize that."
Callahan also reached to the round of 60 in the popular
television show American Idol. She has already put her vocal talents on display
for the SLU community, as she performed the National Anthem before the men's
basketball game versus Xavier at Chaifetz Arena, on Tuesday, Feb. 29.
Haley Chapline
(Loveland, Ohio/Ursuline)
Chapline captained the Lions to an 11-7 mark her senior
year en route to being named First Team All-District by the Cincinnati Enquirer. In her senior
campaign, the defender paced the Southwest Ohio Field Hockey League with eight
defensive saves, in addition to racking up 12 defensive interceptions. Chapline
also managed to net one goal from the back. In addition to suiting up for
Ursuline, she also competed for the Heartland Field Hockey club team.
"We look forward to bringing Haley into the program to
add depth," Bruce said. "She will be able to provide help at a number of
positions."
Sarah Goings
(Fairfax, Va./W.T. Woodson)
Goings lettered twice for the Cavaliers and garnered
Second Team All-District plaudits from the Fairfax Times for the 2010 season.
The utility player suited up for the Capitol Pegasus club program, which
competed in the 2011 edition of the National Club Championship, Disney Showcase
and National Hockey Festival. Her versatility makes her an immediate valuable
asset to the team.
"Sarah will bring versatility to the team," Bruce said.
"She's a back player by trade, but I'd like to see her move to the midfield or
forward line to utilize her speed."
Laney Hinkebein
(Lousville, Ky. /Collegiate)
Hinkebein is prepared to compete at the collegiate level
after a successful prep career. She lettered three years at Collegiate. She was
a 2010 All-American nominee and was MVP of her squad in 2010. Hinkebein is
currently playing for the Bluegrass Premier Field Hockey Club.
"We're really excited about Laney," Bruce said. "She
comes from a really good high school and club program in Louisville. She will
probably see some time in the backfield, maybe pushing the midfield. She's
really thoughtful with the ball and has good skill."
Corinne Murphy
(Chesterfield, Mo./Lafayette)
Murphy led the charge for Lafayette as the Lancers
claimed the 2011 state championship. The St.
Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro selection scored four goals - including
the game winner vs. rival Marquette - and distributed 18 assists. Murphy
will join fellow Lafayette alum Shannon Knobloch on the roster. She plays for
the Gateway Field Hockey Club.
"We're hoping to utilize her in either the midfield or
backfield," Bruce said. "She has great field awareness and makes others around
her better."
Tori Westhead (Ann
Arbor, Mich./Huron)
Westhead kept the net for the two-time Michigan state
championship team at Huron. As a senior, she helped the team to an undefeated
18-0-1 mark after the River Rats posted a 17-2 record her junior year. Westhead
is a member of the Pinnacle Field Hockey Club.
"We like to have players like Tori in the program who
know what it takes to win," Bruce said. "We're looking for her to come in and
challenge for a starting role."
