ST. LOUIS - Alyson Brand's RBI single in the sixth inning backed the pitching
of Hannah Huebbe in Saint Louis' 1-0
victory over Wichita State in game one of a doubleheader Wednesday at the
Billiken Sports Center.
Wichita
State won the nightcap 7-2.
With
one out in the sixth inning of the opener, Erin
Harcar grounded a triple just inside the first-base bag. Brand followed
with a single to center for her team-leading 12th RBI of the season.
Huebbe
(7-5) fired a three-hitter in notching her first shutout of the season and the
10th of her career. She struck out three and walked one. Huebbe worked around
her own throwing error that put the tying run on with nobody out in the
seventh, and she stranded two Wichita State runners in the fifth.
Kelly Flanagan, Laura Bohning and Kelsey
Biggs singled for the Billikens.
In
game two, Wichita State (7-20) scored twice in the second inning and expanded
its lead to 5-1 in the third on a two-out, three-run home run by Erin Carney.
The
Billikens (13-15) plated single runs in the second and third. Jessica Buschjost's two-out infield
single in the second scored Rachel
Faletto, who reached via a leadoff walk, stole second and moved to third on
Kerri Dockins' sacrifice.
In
the third, Flanagan was hit by
a pitch, Biggs singled and Faletto walked to load the bases with one out. Pinch
runner Liz Jones scored on Jessica Van Nostrand's fielder's
choice.
However,
Wichita State hurler Katie Armagost retired 13 of the final 14 batters she
faced, and the Shockers tacked on two insurance runs in the seventh.
Buschjost
was 2-for-4 and stole three bases, and Lindsay
Friedman added a hit for Saint Louis. Julian
Austin (3-5) suffered the loss.
The
Billikens open Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday, March 23, with a single game
against Rhode Island. First pitch at the Billiken Sports Center is scheduled
for 3 p.m.
