- Alyson Brand was 3-for-3 and drove
in three runs to lead Saint Louis to a 4-2 Atlantic 10 Conference win over
Rhode Island Saturday at the Billiken Sports Center.
With SLU leading 2-0, the game was
resumed in the top of the fifth after being halted by rain Friday night.
Laura
Bohning
was 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Billikens, who improved to 14-16 overall and
1-1 in the A-10. Rhode Island, which won the opener of the two-game set 8-3, slipped
to 8-14, 1-1.
When the game resumed, Rhode
Island's Stacey Fox (walk) was at first base. Fox moved to second on a
sacrifice, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on Courtney
Prendergast's team-leading fifth home run of the season.
The Billikens answered right
away by scoring two unearned runs in the bottom of the frame. Jessica Buschjost led off and reached
when the URI first baseman dropped a throw from the third baseman. Buschjost
advanced on a ground ball and scored from second on Brand's single to deep
shortstop.
Brand moved to second on a wild
pitch, and Bohning's single up the middle plated pinch runner Liz Jones to make it 4-2.
Saint Louis took a 1-0 lead in
the first. Lindsay Friedman drew a
one-out walk, moved to second on a ground ball and scored on Brand's single up
the middle.
The Billikens made it 2-0 in
the third. Buschjost led off with a bunt single, stole second and scored on
Brand's two-out single to left.
Kelly
Flanagan
(double) and Rachel Faletto had a
hit apiece for Saint Louis.
Hannah
Huebbe
(8-6) collected the win in relief. Huebbe allowed just one hit and struck out
one in 2 1/3 innings of work. Starter Julian
Austin tossed 4 2/3 innings and fanned three while yielding two runs, five
hits and three walks.
The
Billikens host Massachusetts in a doubleheader Sunday, March 25. The starting
time has been moved up an hour to 11 a.m.
