PHILADELPHIA - Kelsey Biggs hit two home runs to lead a 15-hit Saint Louis attack
in the Billikens' 12-0, five-inning win over La Salle Sunday, giving SLU a
sweep of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader.
The Billikens won the opener
4-2 to snap a five-game losing skid. SLU improved to 19-23 overall and 6-6 in
the A-10 with the sweep, while La Salle fell to 6-31, 0-10.
Biggs' first homer was a one-out
solo shot in the second inning that put the Billikens on top 1-0. That proved
to be the only run needed by Kelcie
Matesa (5-7), who fired her second shutout of the season. Matesa allowed
just two hits and a walk while striking out seven.
Lindsay
Friedman followed Biggs' blast with her second home run of the season for a
2-0 SLU lead. Kerri Dockins kept the
inning going with a two-out double, and after Jessica Buschjost walked, Erin
Harcar's single plated Dockins to make it 3-0.
Buschjost scored on Laura Bohning's single, the first of
Bohning's three hits. Harcar scooted home on a double steal to give SLU a 5-0
cushion.
Saint Louis duplicated the outburst
in the third inning, scoring all five runs with two outs. Friedman was hit by a
pitch, advanced to third on another double by Dockins and scored on Buschjost's
infield single. Buschjost stole second, and the Bills scored again when the
shortstop - who had taken the throw from the catcher - threw wildly to third in
an attempt to retire Dockins.
Buschjost scored on a single by
Harcar, who took second on the throw to the plate. Bohning followed with an
infield single, and Harcar scored when the pitcher threw the ball away. Alyson Brand's double brought Bohning
home to put SLU in front 10-0.
The Billikens closed the scoring in
the fifth as Biggs registered her second home run of the game and season. It
was a two-run clout that scored Breanna
Lockette, who had drawn a two-out walk.
Bohning doubled in the first inning,
tying her for the team lead with six two-baggers. Buschjost was 2-for-3 for her
team-leading 12th multi-hit game, while Rachel
Faletto and Jessica Van Nostrand
added a single apiece.
The Billikens grabbed a 1-0 edge in
the first inning of game one. Buschjost led off with a single, stole second,
moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher and scored on Brand's
sacrifice fly.
A pair of solo home runs in the
bottom of the inning gave the Explorers a 2-1 lead, a score that held until the
Saint Louis fourth.
Bohning led off with a single and
advanced to third on Brand's sacrifice and Faletto's single. She scored the
tying run on a single by Biggs.
After Faletto and Biggs pulled off a
double steal, Friedman came through with a single that plated Faletto with the
go-ahead run. Friedman was thrown out at second, but Biggs caught the La Salle
defense napping and dashed home to make it 4-2.
La Salle brought the potential tying
run to the plate in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, but SLU hurler Julian Austin (4-7) shut the door each
time. Austin fanned five, did not walk a batter and, after surrendering three
first-inning hits, scattered four safeties the rest of the game.
Friedman was 2-for-3, and Van
Nostrand recorded a single.
Saint Louis steps out of A-10 play
Wednesday, April 18, with a 3 p.m. single game at SIU Edwardsville.
