CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 10 Saint Louis advanced to the
quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship with a 4-2 first-round
victory over No. 7 Fordham Thursday afternoon at Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Billikens (12-9) will take on second-seeded
Charlotte (15-5) Friday at noon (CT). Charlotte received a first-round bye.
Brooke Urzendowski and Kasia
Tomalak fell 8-2 to Sarah Ali and Bella Genkina at No. 2 in the first
completed doubles match, but the Billikens claimed the point with a pair of
victories. Stephanie Hollis and Maria Toro Moreno cruised past Julie
Leong and Hanna Fritzinger 8-1 at No. 3, while Jenny Nalepa and Mia Elmore
put SLU on top 1-0 by downing Amy Simidian and Angelika Dabu 8-5 at No. 1.
The Bills won at Nos. 2, 4 and 5
singles. Hollis fought to a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Ali at No. 2;
Urzendowski breezed past Genkina 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4; and Moreno was a 7-6, 6-3
winner over Leong at No. 5.
Elsewhere, Simidian defeated Nalepa
1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, and Dabu got past Elmore 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3. Madeline Jolly edged Fritzinger 7-6 in
the opening set at No. 6, and set two was tied 3-3 when the match was halted.
"This was a very good win over a
tough team that was ranked earlier in the season," head coach Jon Zych said. "We really stepped up in
doubles, and everybody contributed. We'll continue to just go for it against
Charlotte on Friday."
Fordham finished 17-6.
