MERION
STATION, Pa. -
Alyson Brand hit a game-tying home
run in the sixth inning, and Kelsey
Biggs delivered a game-winning long ball in the seventh as Saint Louis
posted a 5-3 victory over Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon at SJU Softball
Field, earning a split of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader.
Saint Joseph's won the opener
2-0.
Brand's homer, her fourth of
the season, was a one-out shot that came after Saint Joseph's (18-27-1, 7-10-1
A-10) had taken a 3-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Biggs broke the 3-3 tie by
leading off the seventh with her fourth big fly of the year. Kerri Dockins and Erin Harcar followed with singles, and the Billikens (21-31, 8-10
A-10) added an insurance run when Laura
Bohning came through with a two-out single that plated Dockins.
Saint Louis earned a 2-0 lead
with single tallies in the first and third frames.
Jessica
Buschjost
reached on an error leading off the game. Buschjost stole second, moved to
third on Lindsay Friedman's
sacrifice and scored on Bohning's single.
In the third, Buschjost led off
with an infield single, advanced to third on Friedman's sacrifice and Bohning's
groundout, and scored on a two-out single by Brand.
Kelcie
Matesa (6-7)
pitched two scoreless relief innings to pick up the win. Matesa did not allow a
hit while striking out one and walking one. Starter Hannah Huebbe scattered three hits while working the first five
innings.
Friedman and Jessica Van Nostrand added a single
apiece to the Bills' 10-hit attack.
In the opener, Saint Joseph's
grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first and made it 2-0 in the fifth. Saint Louis
failed to score in the second after singles by Brand and Rachel Faletto put runners at first and second with nobody out. The
Bills had the tying run aboard in the fourth, and at the plate in the sixth and
seventh, but could not capitalize.
Faletto had two hits, while
Buschjost and Van Nostrand each recorded a single. Julian Austin (5-11), who yielded six hits and a walk while fanning
four in five innings, absorbed the loss. Matesa tossed a perfect sixth inning
in relief.

Billikens host Southeast Missouri State Tuesday, May 1, in a doubleheader that
