ST.
LOUIS - Julian Austin tossed a five-hitter, and
right fielder Erin Harcar cut down
the tying run at the plate in the top of the seventh as Saint Louis defeated
Southeast Missouri State 1-0 in game one of a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at
the Billiken Sports Center.
SEMO won the nightcap 6-1.
In the opener, the Billikens
(22-32) scored the only run of the game in the second inning.
Rachel
Faletto led
off with a walk and was forced at second on an unsuccessful sacrifice attempt
by Jessica Van Nostrand. Van
Nostrand advanced to second on a Kelsey
Biggs single, scooted to third on Kerri
Dockins' fly ball to right field and scored on Harcar's single.
Austin (6-11) allowed a single
to Evan Sallis leading off the game, but catcher Alyson Brand nailed Sallis trying to steal. Austin then pitched
around a two-out walk by striking out Taylor Cowan.
In the second, the sophomore
right-hander issued a leadoff walk to Lindsey Patterson before retiring 12
Redhawks in succession. Kaitlin Wallace broke the string with a sixth-inning
leadoff double, but Austin set down the next three batters to keep SEMO off the
board.
The Redhawks rallied with two
outs in the seventh as infield singles by Xia Wilson and Simone Patterson put
runners at first and second. Shelby Stein followed with a sharp single to
right, but Harcar's throw reached home on the fly, and Brand tagged out pinch
runner Renee Terry to end the game.
Austin struck out four and
walked two. Dockins and Jessica Buschjost
collected two hits apiece, while Brand and Faletto had a double and single,
respectively.
In game two, SEMO (23-30) did
all its damage in the first inning, scoring six runs on six hits against SLU
starter Hannah Huebbe (10-14). Kelcie Matesa fanned five and yielded
just two hits and two walks in 6 1/3 innings of relief.
The Billikens scored their only
run in the second. Lindsey Friedman
drew a one-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Van
Nostrand's single up the middle. Buschjost's sixth-inning single was SLU's only
other hit.
The
Bills conclude the regular season Saturday, May 5, with an Atlantic 10
Conference doubleheader against George Washington. The twinbill begins at noon.
