ST.
LOUIS - Hannah Huebbe and Kelcie Matesa combined to pitch a 5-hitter, and Liz Jones and Alyson Brand had an RBI apiece as Saint Louis edged George
Washington 2-1 Saturday in game two of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader
at the Billiken Sports Center.
George Washington (22-28, 11-9
A-10) won the opener 2-0.
Huebbe (11-14) worked the first
four innings to pick up the win. She allowed a run on four hits, struck out
five and did not walk a batter. Matesa tossed three scoreless innings to earn
her fourth save. She yielded one hit and one walk and fanned one.
The Billikens struck for a
first-inning run. Lindsay Friedman
singled to left with one out, and Rachel
Faletto reached when the GW first baseman dropped a throw from the pitcher.
Brand followed with a single to right that plated Friedman.
After George Washington pulled
even in the top of the second, Saint Louis scored what proved to be the winning
run in the third. Brand led off with a double down the left-field line, and Jessica Van Nostrand drew a one-out
walk. Kerri Dockins was hit by a
pitch with two outs to load the bases, and Jones coaxed a walk that brought in
pinch runner Katie Kroeger.
GW had runners at second and
third with nobody out in the fourth, but Huebbe got two strikeouts and caught a
soft line drive to end the threat.
Matesa retired the first seven
batters she faced before running into trouble in the seventh. A walk and a single
placed the tying and go-ahead runs on first and second, but Matesa put out the
fire by inducing a ground ball and striking out the final batter.
Jessica
Buschjost
added a single for the Billikens.
In game one, GW tallied an
unearned run in the sixth and had the bases loaded with nobody out and the
middle of its order coming up. However, SLU hurler Julian Austin (6-12) registered a strikeout, a fly ball and another
strikeout to limit the damage.
George Washington tacked on an insurance
run in the seventh.
Austin surrendered just five
hits and one walk while striking out four. Laura
Bohning, Van Nostrand, Dockins and Friedman collected a hit apiece.
Saint
Louis finished the season 23-33 overall and 9-11 in the A-10.
