Box Score ST. LOUIS - Carly Marcum and Lauren Baumet combined for 20 kills for
Saint Louis, but Western Illinois collected a 25-22, 25-17, 25-23 non-conference
victory over the Billikens Tuesday night at Chaifetz Pavilion.
Western Illinois
improved to 8-9, while Saint Louis fell to 5-13.
Marcum led SLU
with 11 kills and a .321 attack percentage (11-2-28), while Baumet contributed
nine kills. Grace Bonoma and Andrea Bolt tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
Saint Louis
rallied from a 13-7 deficit to tie the opening frame at 14. The set was knotted
six more times before Western Illinois gained a 22-20 edge, and the
Leathernecks held on for the win.
A 9-2 run gave
Western Illinois a 12-5 cushion in set two, and the Leathernecks remained in
command to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set
was close throughout, with neither team claiming a lead of more than three
points. The Billikens led 13-10, but an 8-2 spurt put the Leathernecks in front
18-15. SLU cut the WIU lead to one point four times but could not get over the
top.
The
Billikens return to Atlantic 10 Conference play Saturday, Oct. 6, when they
host new league member Butler at 4 p.m.
