GENEVA, Ohio. - The
Billiken Swimming and Diving teams wrapped up the 2013 Atlantic 10 Conference
Championships today. The men's team scored 386.5 points to finish sixth and the
women's team scored 185 points to finish ninth. Numerous swimmers scored for the
Bills, but Stephen Hansen was the
lone SLU swimmer to finish first. He is only the second male swimmer to ever win
an individual gold at the A-10 Championship.
On day three, Hansen touched the wall at 55.34 in the
100-yard breaststroke to earn gold in the event. He is the first Billiken of
either gender to win the 100-yard breaststroke at the A-10 Championship. Only
Hansen and Saint Louis great Brad Byars (2008 100-yard freestyle) have won gold
medals for the men's team at Saint Louis.
Hansen was not the only Billiken to medal in an event. Sophomore
Morgan Peterson was very fast for
the women. She earned bronze medals in three separate events: 200-yard IM
(2:02.60), 100-yard butterfly (55.04) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.52). Patrick May won a bronze medal in the
100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.87, just beating out teammate Zack Billingsley (44.88). Patrick MacArt (45.18) also scored in
the event, finishing sixth.
The men's team was very strong in the relay events. The quad
of Billingsley, May, MacArt and Will Butzke
touched the wall at 1:21.78 in the 200-yard freestyle relay earning third in
the event. In the men's 200-yard medley relay, the squad of May, Hansen, Butzke
and Billingsley finished third with a time of 1:30.56. This team also finished
third in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:18.72.
Last season, SLU won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a race that
head coach Jim Halliburton called "the
best race I've ever seen." This season, the Billikens battled, but the team of
Billingsley, May, MacArt and Brendan Hulseman
fell just short, finishing second at 2:59.03.
The only relay event that the men did not medal in was the
800-yard freestyle relay.
