INDIANAPOLIS – Lindsay Friedman's seventh-inning grand slam, her second of the season, gave Saint Louis a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over Butler in game one of an Atlantic 10 Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at BU Softball Field.
In the nightcap, Kelsey Biggs' two-run single in the eighth inning backed the shutout pitching of Laney Kneib and Brianna Lore in a 2-0 Billiken win.
The sweep lifted Saint Louis (22-18, 10-6 A-10), which has won eight of nine, into sixth place in the conference standings, one-half game ahead of Dayton (10-7). The top six teams at the conclusion of the regular season advance to the A-10 Championship May 8-11 in Amherst, Mass.
Friedman's slam gave her five RBIs for the game, tying the SLU record. It also boosted her into the team lead in home runs (five) and RBIs (20).
Butler (18-24, 7-9 A-10) was just one out from victory in the opener after Kristin Gutierrez retired the first two batters in the seventh. But Erin Harcar was hit by a pitch to keep the inning alive, and pinch hitter Katie Kroeger blooped a single to left.
The Bulldogs opened the door wider when the second baseman couldn't handle a ground ball off the bat of Jessica Buschjost. Friedman then cleared the center-field fence with what proved to be the game-winning blast.
Butler threatened in the bottom of the inning. A double and single with one out put the tying runs aboard, but Lore (11-12) retired the next two batters to secure her fourth consecutive complete-game victory.
After the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second, the Billikens answered right away with two runs of their own in the third.
Elizabeth Everingham led off with an infield single but was still at first with two outs. However, Gutierrez hit Buschjost with a pitch, and the Bills took advantage with RBI singles off the bats of Friedman and Laura Bohning.
Butler regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning.
Lore allowed nine hits but did not walk a batter for a second time in three games. She struck out three. Bohning added a single to join Friedman with multiple hits.
In game two, Butler's Leah Bry struck out seven of the first nine Saint Louis hitters, including the first six, and did not allow a hit until Bohning's two-out single in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Kneib (11-6) was up to the task of keeping the Bulldogs off the board as well. She was aided by a first-inning double play on a failed sacrifice attempt, worked around a pair of two-out singles in the second, and stranded a runner in scoring position in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Bills threatened in the fourth and fifth frames. After Bohning broke up the no-hitter in the fourth, Jessica Van Nostrand's single put runners at the corners, but the rally ended there. In the fifth, Bry issued a one-out walk to Everingham and a two-out pass to Olivia Roback before chalking up an inning-ending strikeout.
SLU loaded the bases in the seventh. Alyson Brand led off with a walk, and with two down, Harcar was hit by a pitch and pinch hitter Ellie Huffman walked. But Bry again escaped.
In the eighth, Friedman came through again with a leadoff single and went to second on Van Nostrand's one-out single. Both runners moved up on Brand's ground ball, and Biggs delivered a single to left that plated Friedman and Van Nostrand for a 2-0 Saint Louis lead.
After Kneib surrendered a pair of one-out singles in the bottom of the eighth, Lore was brought in and promptly induced a game-ending 4-6-3 double play to notch her third save of the year.
Kneib struck out two, scattered seven hits and walked only one.
The Billikens play single games at Charlotte Friday and Saturday, April 26-27.
