Bohning's Two Grand Slams in One Inning Lead SLU Rout

KINGSTON, R.I. – Move over, Fernando Tatis. You have company.

Saint Louis University designated player Laura Bohning became the second St. Louis player to hit two grand slams in one inning Friday afternoon in SLU's 21-2 thrashing of Rhode Island that left the Billikens just one win away from clinching a spot in next week's Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

Bohning is the fourth player in NCAA Division I history to hit two grand slams in one game and the third to achieve the feat in one inning, joining Central Florida's Stephanie Best (2003) and Missouri State's Staci Wattie (2000). UAB's Holly Krzan (2007) hit two slams in the same game but in different innings. Bohning also became just the second SLU softball player to homer twice in one game.

The blasts were part of a 12-run seventh inning for the Billikens – who improved to 25-19 overall and 12-7 in the A-10 – and moved Bohning into a tie with Nicki Jost (2007-10) for the Saint Louis career record with 17 homers.

Unlike the St. Louis Cardinals' Tatis – whose two slams on April 23, 1999, against the Dodgers in Los Angeles were hit off the same pitcher, Chan Ho Park – Bohning delivered against two different hurlers. However, she was the first batter faced by both pitchers.

Bohning, who had an RBI single in the sixth inning, collected a school-record and A-10 season-high nine RBIs (two shy of the NCAA record) and also set a school mark with 11 total bases (two home runs, double, single). In addition, she tied three other single-game school standards and was joined by a different teammate in each category – four hits (tied with Jessica Van Nostrand, who had a double and three singles); four runs (tied with Lindsay Friedman); and six at-bats (tied with Kelsey Biggs). The six at-bats equaled the season high by an A-10 player.

The Saint Louis record book also was rewritten in a defensive category. Second baseman Olivia Roback tied the school mark with eight assists in support of freshman left-hander Brianna Lore (13-13), who struck out three, did not walk a batter and allowed just four hits. Both runs scored by Rhode Island (9-35, 2-16 A-10) were unearned.

Shortstop Van Nostrand also made Billiken history, registering four assists to give her a school-record 135 assists this season.

The Billikens set a school-record with 20 hits. Their 21 runs and 20 RBIs are the most in program history against a Division I opponent and also the most by an Atlantic 10 team this season.

Biggs and Ellie Huffman also homered and had two hits and two RBIs apiece. Erin Harcar was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, and Friedman had two hits including a double.

After allowing a first-inning run, SLU scored single runs in the second and third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and two in the sixth.

The Billikens and Rams meet again Saturday at 11 a.m. (CT) before SLU closes the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at Massachusetts, which hosts the six-team A-10 Championship May 8-11. Now in sole possession of fifth place, SLU needs one more win this weekend to clinch a tournament berth.
