Friedman Ties Single-Season Home Run Record, but Bills Fall

KINGSTON, R.I.Lindsay Friedman tied a school record with her seventh home run of the year, but a four-run fourth inning powered Rhode Island to a 7-5 Atlantic 10 Conference win over Saint Louis Saturday afternoon at the URI Softball Complex.

Saint Louis (25-20, 12-8 A-10) still needs one victory to clinch a berth in the A-10 Championship, which will be played May 8-11 at Massachusetts. The Billikens conclude the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader at UMass that begins at 11 a.m. (CT).

SLU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Friedman doubled with one out and scored on a two-out single by Kelsey Biggs. The Bills made it 2-0 in the second when Elizabeth Everingham, who had led off with a double and moved to third on Erin Harcar's fly ball, scored on a passed ball.

Rhode Island (10-35, 3-16 A-10) plated a run in the bottom of the second, but Friedman got it right back with a leadoff homer in the third to tie Kara Sell (2006) and Caitlin Trevillyan (2010) for the Saint Louis season record.

After the Rams tallied again in their half of the third, the Billikens made it a 4-2 game in the fourth. Everingham and Ellie Huffman drew walks to start the inning, and Harcar followed with a single that brought in Everingham.

All four Rhode Island runs in the fourth scored with two away. A two-run triple by Emily Hendricks and a two-run home run by Courtney Prendergast were the big blows.

Saint Louis narrowed the gap to 6-5 and had a chance for more in the sixth. Harcar led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Jessica Buschjost. The bases were loaded with one out following Friedman's fielder's choice and a walk to Laura Bohning, but the Billikens could not capitalize.

URI tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the frame and retired the Bills in order in the seventh.

Biggs added a single to join Friedman and Harcar with two hits apiece. Laney Kneib (12-7) took the pitching loss for the Billikens.
