AMHERST, Mass. – Jessica Van Nostrand had three RBIs, and Alyson Brand and Elizabeth Everingham drove in two runs apiece to power Saint Louis to an 8-3 win over George Washington Thursday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Championship elimination game at Sortino Field.
The fifth-seeded Billikens (28-22) will face No. 3 Temple (31-25) in an elimination game Friday, May 10, at 11:30 a.m. Central. Should they win, the Bills would play the loser of the game matching No. 1 Saint Joseph's and No. 2 Fordham – the two remaining undefeated teams – 30 minutes after the conclusion of their first game for the right to advance to the championship round.
Van Nostrand, Kelsey Biggs, Laura Bohning and Erin Harcar had two hits apiece to lead SLU's 12-hit barrage. Biggs added an RBI, while Brand, Everingham, Jessica Buschjost and Lindsay Friedman each had a hit.
Starting pitcher Laney Kneib worked into the fifth inning and improved to 14-8 on the season. Kneib allowed three runs on seven hits, struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Brianna Lore tossed three innings of one-hit ball to pick up her fifth save, a Saint Louis single-season record.
The Billikens – who have outscored their opponents 42-12 in the first inning this year – plated a run in the opening frame. Buschjost led off with a single, moved to second on Friedman's sacrifice and scored on Biggs' two-out double.
Bohning drew a leadoff walk to ignite a three-run fourth inning. Biggs doubled again to put runners at second and third, and Van Nostrand followed with a two-run double. A throwing error on the play allowed Van Nostrand to scoot to third, and she scored on Brand's squeeze bunt to make it 4-0.
GW (27-23) threatened in the fourth, but left fielder Friedman threw out a Colonial runner at the plate to end the inning. The Billikens tacked on a run in the fifth as Friedman recorded a one-out infield single, Bohning doubled, Biggs was intentionally walked, and Van Nostrand singled to score Friedman.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Colonials scored once and had the bases loaded with nobody out when Lore entered the game. Consecutive ground-ball outs plated GW runs, but Lore recorded the third out on a comebacker to halt the rally.
SLU added three insurance markers in the seventh, all coming with two outs. Bohning singled with one out, and Van Nostrand was hit by a pitch with two away. Brand drove in Bohning with a single, and she and Van Nostrand moved up on a throwing error. Everingham's single chased home Van Nostrand and pinch runner Madeline Brungardt.
TOURNAMENT NOTES: No. 1 seed Saint Joseph's and No. 2 seed Fordham are the tournament's only remaining undefeated teams. Saint Joseph's edged SLU 4-3 earlier Thursday, while Fordham followed with an 8-2 victory over No. 3 Temple … the Bills swept Temple in the teams' regular-season doubleheader April 20 in St. Louis, winning the opener 3-2 and taking game two 11-3 in five innings … Saint Louis is two wins away from tying the school record.
