AMHERST, Mass. – Temple's Jessica Mahoney limited Saint Louis to two hits, and the third-seeded Owls scored a run in the first inning and three in the fifth to defeat the fifth-seeded Billikens 4-0 Friday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Championship elimination game at Sortino Field.
Saint Louis, which posted a 2-2 record at the conference tournament, finished the season 28-23 overall.
Temple (32-25) advances to face top-seeded Saint Joseph's in another elimination contest Friday afternoon. The winner must defeat second-seeded Fordham twice in the championship round Saturday to claim the tourney title and the A-10's automatic NCAA Championship bid.
Mahoney (9-10), who pitched just 2/3 of an inning in relief when SLU and Temple met in a regular-season doubleheader, struck out three and walked four. A double by Jessica Van Nostrand and a single by Alyson Brand were the Billikens' only two hits. Elizabeth Everingham drew two walks.
Brianna Lore (14-15) yielded six hits and a walk while striking out three.
Saint Louis had at least one baserunner in five of seven innings, but Mahoney allowed just one of those runners to advance to third base.
