ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis head field hockey coach Danielle Baumgardner has announced her first recruiting class with the Billikens. She is bringing in six student-athletes to begin competition in the 2017 season. Joining SLU next season are: Julia Bakker (Haarlem, Netherlands/Kennemer Lyceum), Anna Enright (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West), Bailey Foreman (Holmdel, N.J./Saint John Vianney), Claire Hellmann (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day), Noor Kalf (Bilthoven, Netherlands) and Erin McClelland (Fallston, Md./Fallston).

“I am eager to have these six student-athletes join the SLU field hockey family,” Baumgardner said. “Each has the ability to succeed on the field, in the classroom and in the community. Additionally, they are all excited to be a Billiken and support my vision for the program. We are working to play a very fast-paced style of hockey and I believe that each of these young women will fit in well with our system. I am honored to be able to coach them during their collegiate careers.”

Bakker is from Haarlem in the Netherlands. She plays as a forward for her high school team, scoring several goals in international competition against teams from Germany, Ireland and South Africa. For the past two seasons, Bakker has played for the HBS hockey club, which competes internationally across Europe. She speaks four languages (Dutch, English, French and German) and can translate Ancient Greek and Latin.

“Julia is an exciting forward with smooth skills and great field vision that allows her to find the back of the net,” Baumgardner said. “Additionally, she has a great vision for her future as she is extremely motivated and determined in the classroom. I am excited to see her achieve her potential as a Billiken.”

Enright is a standout from Glenbard West in Glen Ellyn, Ill. She played forward and midfield for the Hilltoppers. Enright was a four-year letterwinner, earning All-State and All-Conference accolades. She was named to the 2016 Illinois State All-Star Game after scoring 20 goals with 11 assists as a senior. Enright also is a standout in the classroom, earning All-State academic honors from 2014 to 2016.

“Anna’s commitment to excellence in all areas of life is very apparent in her play and in conversations with her,” Baumgardner said. “Her discipline, smart off-ball movement, and variety of skills enables her to finish the play in the attacking circle. I am looking forward to having Anna add to the depth of our forward line.”

Foreman is a goalie from Saint John Vianney in Holmdel, N.J. She has been a three-year letterwinner for the Lancers, recording 300+ career saves and 10 shutouts. As a junior, Foreman was named the top goalie in the Shore Conference. In her senior season, she was named one of the 20 players to watch in New Jersey field hockey. In the classroom, Foreman was named to the Honor Roll of Distinction. She also earned the Gold Community Service Award from Saint John Vianney.

“Bailey’s knowledge of the program and determination to be a Billiken impressed me from the moment I met her,” Baumgardner said. “These individual qualities combined with her solid presence in the cage will add quality to our goalkeeping unit.”

Hellmann comes to the Billikens after a four-year career at Summit Country Day in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the midfield, she was a first-team All-Conference selection for the Silver Knights as a junior. Hellman helped the Silver Knights to back-to-back state semifinal appearances in her sophomore and junior seasons. Last year, she was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year.

“I am eager to add Claire to our roster,” Baumgardner said. “She is extremely athletic and has the potential to develop into a strong leader for our team. Claire’s play, along with her speed, will fit in well with our system, allowing her to be a versatile player for us.”

Kalf is one of two international students to join the Billikens next year. She hails from Bilthoven, Netherlands where she competes with Utrecht Stedelijk Gymnasium. Noor also played center back with the Stichtse Cricket Hockey Club (SCHC). SCHC won the European Championship in 2015. Four of Noor’s teammates at SCHC are now members of the Dutch national team.

“Noor’s solid individual skills, agility, and mental composure will have an immediate impact on our defensive line,” Baumgardner said. “Noor seemed to be a natural fit on her visit to SLU and I am looking forward to having her. She has terrific potential for us.”

McClelland comes to Saint Louis from Fallston High School in Fallston, Md., where she was a four-year letterwinner. She was an All-County and All-State selection and participated in the 2016 Maryland Senior All-Star game. Despite playing as a defender, McClelland scored 27 career goals as well as 10 defensive saves.

“What I love about Erin is her mentality as an individual and player,” Baumgardner said. “As a defender, she always looks to move forward and attack. As an individual, it is evident that she is never content and is always looking to improve. Erin is one of those people that make others around her want to be better.”
