Samford hit eight first-half 3-pointers and withstood a late Saint Louis rally to post a 68-64 victory at Chaifetz Arena Tuesday night.

The Billikens fall to 2-4 overall, while Samford improves to 4-3.

Mike Crawford led the way for the Billikens with 16 points, followed by Jermaine Bishop’s 15 points. Elliott Welmer was one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Reggie Agbeko, who leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in rebounding, posted 11 rebounds.

SLU shot just 35.3 percent in the first half, but improved to 51.9 percent in the second to finish at 42.6 percent for the game. Meanwhile, Samford was hot from 3-point range in the first half, connecting on 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from long range in the opening stanza. The Bulldogs were 0-for-5 from 3-point range in the second half. Neither team was able to benefit at the free-throw line as Samford shot 46.2 percent and the Billikens 53.3 percent.

The Bulldogs were hot early on, nailing their first four 3-point attempts. Samford led by 15 at one point late in the first half but SLU ended the half with four straight points to trail by 11 at the break.

SLU cut the deficit to two with 13 minutes left on a 3-pointer by Davell Roby. Samford, which never lost the lead in the second half, went up by eight with six minutes remaining. A Bishop 3-pointer and a Jalen Johnson layin put the Billikens behind by one, but they were never able to regain the lead.

In the final seconds, Crawford converted a runner to put the Billikens behind by two, but Samford converted its free throws on the other end to put the game out of reach.

Saint Louis returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Kansas State at Chaifetz Arena. Tip time is 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on FOX Sports Midwest Plus.
