FAIRFAX, Va. – Saint Louis freshman Jalen Johnson posted career highs of 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Billikens to a 63-56 win over George Mason Saturday afternoon at EagleBank Arena.
It was the first Atlantic 10 Conference win of the season for the Billikens, who move to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the league. George Mason dips to 12-6 and 2-3 in the A-10.
Joining Johnson in double figures was Mike Crawford, who scored 13 points. Reggie Agbeko finished with 12 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards.
The Billikens tied a season high with nine 3-pointers, including five from Johnson. SLU forced 11 George Mason turnovers, which the Billikens turned in to 20 points.
SLU was in control the majority of the first half, leading by as much as 16 late. The Billikens took a 31-18 advantage into halftime after limiting the Patriots to 22.7 percent shooting in the frame.
George Mason came out hot in the second half and quickly chipped away at it deficit, going on a 14-3 spurt to open the half to pull within three of the lead. Johnson hit a clutch 3-pointer at the 13:32 mark to make it 37-31 in favor of the Billikens.
The Patriots would tie the score several times over the next 10 minutes, but SLU always had an answer. Both of the Billikens’ true freshmen – Johnson and Zeke Moore – buried big 3-pointers with the score tied.
George Mason finally managed to break through to take a 54-52 lead with 3:52 to go, but its lead was a short-lived. SLU received a basket from Crawford and 3-pointers from Hines to spark an 11-0 run that sealed the victory for SLU. Punctuating the spurt was a fast-break dunk off a steal by Crawford.
The Billikens welcome St. Bonaventure to Chaifetz Arena on Tuesday, Jan. 17, for an 8 p.m. tipoff. The game will be televised and streamed live by the American Sports Network. Channel designations will be announced as soon as they are finalized.
