WASHINGTON, D.C. – George Washington rallied for a 63-55 victory over Saint Louis in Atlantic 10 Conference men’s basketball action Saturday afternoon.

The Billikens fall to 6-15 and 2-7 in A-10 play, while the Colonials improve to 12-9 and 4-4 in the league.

Redshirt freshman forward Elliott Welmer tallied a career-high 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Junior guard Davell Roby scored 13 points and dished out a team-high five assists. Senior guard Mike Crawford chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.

Saint Louis made its first eight shots from the field and its first five attempts from long range and led by as much as 13 points in the first half. Roby’s team-high eight first-half points sent the Billikens to the locker room with a 29-23 lead.

A Welmer 3-pointer with 12:40 remaining put the Billikens ahead by 10, 43-33, before GW mounted its comeback. An 8-0 Colonial run cut the Billikens’ deficit to two, but Crawford buried a 3-pointer to put the Billikens back up by five.

Minutes later, GW tied the score, but Roby responded with a trey of his own and the Billikens led again.

A Crawford 3-point play with 4:24 left gave the Billikens the last lead they would hold. With less than three minutes remaining, GW received a basket by Patrick Steeves and a trey from Jaren Sina, and the Billikens never regained the lead.

The Billikens shot 38.2 percent from the field and 45 percent from the arc. A game after attempting a school-record 55 free throws againt UMass, SLU was awarded just six. Meanwhile, GW was 17-of-23 from the stripe.

Saint Louis is back in action Wednesday night when it hosts George Mason at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
