THE BASICS

Maddie Baalman tossed a four-hit shutout and Mackenzie Lawson drilled an RBI single to lead Saint Louis to a 1-0 victory over Massachusetts in the finale of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series Sunday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.

•The Billikens improved to 15-18 overall and 4-7 in the A-10.

•Massachusetts fell to 15-17, 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED

•Saint Louis tallied the game’s only run in the third. Josie Knesel led off with a double, moved to third on Alex Nickel’s sacrifice and scored on Lawson’s base hit.

•Baalman, who did not allow a hit through the first 3 1/3 innings, worked out of jams in the fourth, fifth and sixth. She stranded two runners in each inning, with her best work coming in the sixth after the first two UMass batters reached base.

BILLIKEN NOTABLES

•Baalman, who struck out five, recorded her second shutout this season and third of her career.

Mackenzie Peter registered a double.
