Alyssa Tarquinio and Allie Macfarlane drove in two runs apiece to back the three-hit pitching of Maddie Baalman, and Saint Louis topped Dayton 5-3 in an Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Championship first-round game Wednesday afternoon.

•The fifth-seeded Billikens (25-23) will take on top-seeded Fordham in a winner's bracket game Thursday at 9 a.m. (CT). Fordham received a first-round bye. Note the earlier start time due to expected rain later in the day.

•No. 4 Dayton (29-26) drops to the loser's bracket and will face No. 6 George Mason later Wednesday.

•Dayton got on the board first with an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning.

•Saint Louis plated three runs in the top of the fourth. Walks to Josie Knesel and Mackenzie Peter sandwiched an Allie Macfarlane single to load the bases with one out. Tarquinio delivered a two-run single, and Taylor Meeks followed with an RBI single.

•The Billikens tacked on two runs in the fifth. Alex Nickel drew a one-out walk and stole second with two away. Following a walk to Mackenzie Lawson, Macfarlane lifted a triple to right-center that increased the lead to 5-1.

•Dayton tallied twice in the seventh and had the tying runs aboard, but Baalman got Gabby Snyder to line out to Nickel at shortstop to end the game.

•Baalman added to her career-high victory total, improving to 15-12. She struck out five.

•Tarquinio added a single to join Macfarlane in the two-hit column.
