No. 22 Michigan State scored twice in the second half to upend Saint Louis 2-0 Sunday in nonconference men’s soccer action at Hermann Stadium.

It was the second straight match for the Billikens (0-2) against a top-25 opponent. Michigan State improved to 2-0 with the victory.

The match was scoreless until the 67th minute, when Hunter Barone put the Spartans on top with a tally off a Ryan Sierakowski pass. With four seconds remaining in regulation, MSU’s Ryan Scott scored for the 2-0 final.

The Billikens, who managed 11 shots and earned seven corner kicks, applied pressure late but were never able to get one past MSU keeper Jimmy Hague.

At halftime of the match, members of the 1967 Saint Louis and Michigan State teams were honored in celebration of the 50th anniversary of their co-National Championship crown. SLU and Michigan State shared the NCAA title that year after the championship match was called due to dangerous field conditions.

QUOTABLE – SLU Head Coach Mike McGinty
“We were too casual and too passive until we went down a goal, and then we came to life. We had a number of players who came on fresh and had opportunities, but we didn’t start with the energy that we needed to dictate the game. There were moments today that were positive, but certainly not 90 minutes worth. We don’t play teams where you can tune out for 10 or 15 minutes – we need 90 minutes out of our guys.”

The Billikens remain at Hermann Stadium to face No. 2 Wake Forest on Saturday, Sept. 2. Game time is 7 p.m.
