Gabbie Kowalik and Kat Lane led a 12-hit Saint Louis attack with three hits apiece, but the Billikens were eliminated from the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship with a 7-5 loss to Massachusetts Thursday at Sortino Field.
Mackenzie Lawson added her team-leading eighth home run for the Billikens.
Saint Louis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Lane led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a Kowalik single.
The Bills made it 3-0 in the third. Singles by Lauren Lomax and Sadie Wise and a walk to Kowalik loaded the bases with one out. Maria Connell’s infield single scored Lomax, and Kaylyn Breitbach drove in Wise with a sacrifice fly.
It was 4-0 after Lawson led off the fourth with a majestic blast off the left-field scoreboard, but UMass plated six runs in its half of the inning. The Minutewomen tacked on an insurance tally in the fifth.
The Billikens inched closer with a run in the sixth. After Alyssa Chavez led off with a single, Lomax reached on a fielder’s choice that erased pinch runner Kylie Hess. Lane followed with a single, and with two outs, Kowalik delivered an RBI single that chased Lomax home.
