Fifth-Inning Rally Gives Billikens Win Over La Salle

ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis baseball team won its second consecutive win over Atlantic 10 foe La Salle with an 11-3 victory. The win puts the Billikens at 28-14 overall and 10-7 in conference action.

With their 28th victory, the 2012 Bills are five wins away from matching the school record for victories. The 2010 squad set the current standard with their 33 wins. Since head coach Darin Hendrickson took over the squad in 2008, the Billikens have reached the 30-win mark twice (2009 and 2010).

In today's contest, the Explorers scored first, scoring a run in the bottom of the third. The Billikens responded in the fifth, with a three-run outburst in the top-half of the frame. Saint Louis loaded the bases with two outs in the inning and capitalized on a La Salle error, scoring three unearned runs in the inning.

La Salle cut the lead to one in the bottom of the six. Heading into the seventh inning, SLU led 3-2.

In the seventh, Saint Louis sent four Billikens across the plate. Junior Mike Levine singled up the middle to score two. He then pulled off a double steal with double play partner Alec Solé, moving into scoring position. Senior Jerry Mancuso scored the pair on a single to right in the next at bat.

La Salle plated one more in the eighth, but the Billikens were not done. In the ninth, Mancuso belted his second home run of the season over the right field fence, scoring two. He also hit a long ball against UMass on April 20. Junior Alex Kelly followed up with a single to center field. Senior Marco DiRoma scored him with a triple to right field, his third of the season. Sophomore Danny Brennan sent him in with a single to left center.

Junior RHP Alex Alemann notched his sixth win of the season, to advance to 6-0 on the year. The College Baseball Hall of Fame Pitcher of the Year candidate went seven innings, scattering six hits and surrendering three earned runs. He also struck out eight Explorers in the game.

The final match up of the series will be tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The Billikens return to the Billiken Sports Complex on Tues., May 1 when the take on in-state foe Southeast Missouri State. First pitch will be at 6:00 p.m.
