Billikens Earn 30th Win of Season Against SEMO
ST. LOUIS - The Billiken baseball team reached 30 wins for the fourth time in school history with a 4-0 victory over the RedHawks of Southeast Missouri State. The Billikens are now 30-14 on the year and are three wins shy of matching the school record for wins.
Saint Louis reached the 30-win plateau for the third time in head coach Darin Hendrickson's career. The last time the Billikens reached 30 wins was in 2010, when the Bills won the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship. Hendrickson now has 146 wins as the skipper at SLU, the second-most all-time. Only 19-year veteran Bob Hughes has more victories with 361.
The Bills took advantage of SEMO mistakes, beginning in the third inning. With two away and the bases loaded, junior Alex Kelly popped up behind second base. Miscommunication between centerfielder and the second baseman resulted in the ball dropping between the two of them. Freshman Jon Corbitt scored on the play.
In the sixth, with Kelly on second and junior Steve Fernandez at first, junior Jordan Hammerman came in to bunt the runners over. However, the SEMO pitcher threw the ball away for two bases. Fernandez and Kelly scored on the play. Hammerman later scored on a Connor Gandossy single.
Senior Travis Parker threw the eighth and ninth innings, extending his streak to 32.1 innings without an earned run. He also picked up his eighth save of the season. He is now tied for third in the A-10 in the category.
The 4-0 win marks the fifth shutout for the Bills this season. Saint Louis has only been shut out once this season.
The Billikens return to action on Thursday, May 3 when they take on Southern Illinois Edwardsville for the third time this season. Each team has won on the other team's home field this season. This game will be played on a neutral site at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
