ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored two goals in the final 12 minutes and defeated Missouri State 2-0 Saturday night in an exhibition game at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.

Jenny Hummert gave the Billikens the only goal they would need at the 78:03 mark. Jessie Jarrett supplied her teammate with a pinpoint pass from the right flank, and Hummert tucked a straight-ahead, 20-yard shot inside the right post for a 1-0 Saint Louis lead.

The Bills took advantage of a Missouri State miscue to tally an insurance goal. When the Bears' goalkeeper could not find the handle on a loose ball, Lindsay Elking gained control and centered a pass to Abbey Stock, who lifted a shot over the keeper at 85:44.

SLU earned a 12-7 advantage in shots that included a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. Katie Walsh went the distance between the posts for the Billikens.

"It was a good opening game for us," head coach Kat Mertz said. "Missouri State is a good side, and it was nice to be tested and play against somebody other than ourselves.

"In the first half we were a bit cautious, a bit hesitant. I thought we came out stronger in the second half and played a little bit quicker and were trying to connect on one more pass instead of solving it on just one pass.

"It was nice to put a lot of people out there," Mertz said. "We saw some freshmen step up and play well, and our returners gave us good movement off the ball and some scoring chances. Jenny and Abbey, that's what you want, your goal scorers around the goal.

"It was a good first step and I'm pleased, but we still have a lot of work to do."

The Billikens open the regular season Friday, Aug. 17, at Ole Miss.
