ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis secured a 2-0 victory against Jefferson College Sunday at Hermann Stadium in the Billikens' men's soccer exhibition season opener.

SLU, which controlled possession for much of the match, received goals near the end of each half. Robbie Kristo opened the scoring with a goal at 44:32, while Jonathan Svigos provided an insurance marker at 88:24.

"It was a good first game," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "We saw a lot of different combinations and everyone got a little run. We've only been together for four days, so it was good to see where we are and will give us a good indication of what to work on. With three exhibition games this week, it gives us a chance to look at a lot of different things."

Freshman Dirk van der Velde earned the assist on Kristo's goal, sending a long ball out of the back on the right side. Kristo settled it and fired from 12 yards past the Jeffco goalkeeper for the game's first goal.

Svigos made it 2-0 late in regulation thanks to a nifty pass from junior Alex Sweetin. Sweetin sent in a ball from the right flank, and with one touch Svigos finished into the open goal for the final 2-0 margin.

The Billikens return to action Wednesday when they travel to Akron, Ohio, to face the No. 10 Akron Zips. Game time is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CT).
