AKRON, Ohio - Akron scored in the second half to break a scoreless tie, and the No. 6 Zips held on for a 1-0 victory against the Saint Louis Billikens Wednesday night in exhibition men's soccer action at FirstEnergy Stadium/Cub Cadet Field.

The Zips' DeAndre Yedlin scored the game winner at 50:53 when his shot was deflected by a Billiken defender and snuck past keeper Dillon Saffle. Thomas Schmitt earned the assist on the play.

The Billikens nearly took the lead in the first half in a flurry that saw two solid scoring chances. First, Jon Roeckle unleashed a drive from the top of the box that was saved by the Akron keeper. On the rebound, Robbie Kristo sent a ball just wide.

For the second straight match, head coach Mike McGinty was able to see a wide variety of players in different situations, as a total of 24 players saw action for SLU.

The Billikens close out the exhibition season Saturday night at Hermann Stadium when they host Memphis. First whistle is scheduled for 7 p.m. The Billikens' season opener is set for Friday, Aug. 24, against nationally ranked Indiana at Hermann Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
