ST. LOUIS – No. 12 Indiana utilized an own goal in the 67th minute and withstood a late Billiken rally to post a 2-1 win against Saint Louis Friday night in the men’s soccer season opener at Hermann Stadium.

SLU junior Jon Roeckle scored the Billiken goal on an assist from sophomore Kingsley Bryce. Eriq Zavaleta tallied for Indiana. The own goal, the game winner, came after an A.J. Corrado cross was headed in by a SLU defender.

The attendance of 5,346 was the seventh largest crowd in Hermann Stadium history.

“I thought a 1-1 result would have been fair, both teams played well,” SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. “We had two balls cleared off the line that I was already celebrating. If our guys play that hard the rest of the year, we will be very happy with the season.”

The Billikens nearly scored late in the match. David Graydon chipped a ball into the box that Robbie Kristo headed toward goal, but the ball was cleared off the line by an IU defender.

SLU held a 10-7 advantage in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks. SLU keeper Nick Shackelford made two saves for the Bills.

The Billikens face Drake Sunday in a 3 p.m. kick at Hermann Stadium. On Friday, Drake dropped a 1-0 decision to Cincinnati in the first game in the Billiken Classic.
