ST. LOUIS - Junior Adnan Gabeljic scored in the 70th minute, and junior Nick Shackelford was sharp in goal as Saint Louis topped Drake 1-0 Sunday in non-conference men's soccer action at Hermann Stadium. It was the first win of the season for the Billikens (1-1-0).
"It wasn't easy, Drake made it difficult," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "We expended a lot of energy Friday night, so for us to come back today and show some mental strength was good. I'm most pleased with the effort for everyone mentally. We could have very easily felt sorry for ourselves and lose to a good Drake team, but we bounced back and found a way to win today."
Gabeljic scored at 69:30 on an assist by freshman Donte Brangman. Robbie Kristo laid the ball off for Brangman, who whipped a ball into the box. Gabeljic settled it and fired past the Drake (0-2-0) keeper for the game's only score.
Shackelford preserved the shutout with a dazzling save with under 20 minutes remaining. Drake's Garrett Crall had the best scoring chance for the Bulldogs. Crall headed a ball toward the left post that Shackelford, in a full stretch, nabbed before the ball crossed the line. It was Shackelford's sixth career shutout.
In a scoreless first half, Kristo had the first scoring opportunity when he fired to the right side, but the Drake keeper was there to make the save.
On the other end, Shackelford had to be sharp on a shot by Eric Williams, diving to the right to make the save and keep the game scoreless.
Gabeljic had the final prime scoring opportunity of the first session. He fought through the Drake defense and came in all alone, but fired high.
The Billikens out-shot their opponents for the second straight game, earning a 10-9 advantage in the category. SLU also finished with an 8-5 edge in corner kicks.
Saint Louis returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 1, when the Billikens host UMKC at Hermann Stadium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
