ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis scored three unanswered goals for a 3-1 victory against UMKC Saturday in non-conference men's soccer action at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
The win, SLU's second in a row, moves the Billikens to 2-1 on the season. They will take this momentum into a showdown Tuesday night against No. 14 Louisville at Hermann Stadium. Game time for that tilt is slated for 7 p.m.
After UMKC got on the board in the 23rd minute, SLU answered with goals from Nick Maglasang, David Graydon and Robbie Kristo for the 3-1 final.
"I thought we played very well," SLU head coach Mike McGinty said. "We allowed them some momentum after they scored that first goal. It would have been a much different game if we didn't have the miscommunication in the box that led to their goal. That definitely gave them some energy. We had a lot of guys get good looks today, and they did a great job. I'm happy for David to get his first goal, I think it will be his first of many."
UMKC scored on its first shot of the game. Michael Oakley whipped a ball into the penalty area, and Jordan Rideout got his head on it to deflect it past SLU keeper Nick Shackelford for the game's first score at 22:36.
Maglasang tallied the equalizer at the 36:00 mark. In a scramble in the box, Alex Sweetin sent the ball to Magalasang, who one-timed it into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game. It was Maglasang's third career goal.
SLU took the lead in the 66th minute, thanks in part to a strong run up the left side by a speeding Adnan Gabeljic. After out-racing a UMKC defender, Gabeljic found Graydon in the middle of the box. Graydon fired into the upper netting for his first career goal and a 2-1 Billiken lead.
Kristo's insurance marker was initiated after a perfectly flighted ball out of the back by Jon Roeckle. Kristo settled the pass and fired past the UMKC keeper in the 88th minute for the score.
Saint Louis dominated possession and out-shot the Kangaroos 15-9. The Billikens also generated a Hermann Stadium record 19 corner kicks, compared to just one for UMKC.
