LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Saint Louis field hockey staged a rally with goals by Lisa Smith and Tori Lycett, but it was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell 3-2 to Appalachian State Monday at Louisville's Trager Stadium.
Despite giving up three first-half goals, the Billikens (0-5) continued to press and got on the board just before halftime when Smith tallied her team-leading third goal of the season.
In a second half dominated by SLU, Lycett scored in the 59th minute to make it a one-goal game, but the Bills were unable to get another on past the APSU keeper.
In all, the Billikens out-shot Appalachian State (1-3) 15-9 and held a 6-5 advantage in penalty corners. Lexie Lindblad fired a game-high six shots, including four that were on goal.
Saint Louis opens the home portion of its schedule Friday, Sept. 7, against Missouri State. Game time at Anheuser-Busch Center is scheduled for 1 p.m.
