No. 16 Billikens Upend Temple, Grab First Place in A-10
PHILADELPHIA - Saint Louis junior forward Adnan Gabeljic scored a goal and added two assists to help power the Billikens to a 3-1 men's soccer victory Sunday at Temple. Saint Louis now has sole possession of first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference standings.
It was the fifth win in a row for the Billikens (11-3, 5-1 A-10), giving them their longest winning streak since 2009. Temple, which was previously unbeaten in conference play, dips to 7-5-3 overall and 3-1-2 in the league.
For Gabeljic, it was his career high in scoring with four points. Sophomore defender Raymond Lee and freshman midfielder David Graydon also scored for the Billikens.
Lee opened the scoring in the 39th minute. Gabeljic fired a shot that Lee deflected into the net for the game's first tally. It was the fourth goal of the year for Lee, which ties him for second on the squad.
The Billikens made it 2-0 early in the second half when Graydon scored off a pass from Gabeljic for the eventual game winner. It was Graydon's second goal of the season.
Gabeljic registered an insurance marker in the 77th minute after connecting off a feed from junior defender Jon Roeckle. For the season, Gabeljic now has 11 points (4G, 3A), while Roeckle collected his team-high-tying fourth assist.
Junior keeper Nick Shackelford made four saves for the victory in goal. The Billikens outshot Temple 23-15.
SLU has three regular season games remaining, all at home. Next Friday, Oct. 26, the Billiken welcome nationally ranked Charlotte to Hermann Stadium. First whistle is scheduled for 7 p.m.
