Billkens Lose Heartbreaker Against Temple

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis volleyball dropped a tough match to the Temple Owls, 3-2. The Billikens are now 9-18 overall and 3-9 in Atlantic 10 play. Senior Cassie Clarke recorded her 12th double-double of the season with 58 assists and 25 digs.

The first set was a drawn-out battle between two evenly matched teams. As a team, the Billikens hit .296 while holding the Owls to .164 and won the first set 30-28.

In the second, the Billiken offense dropped to a .204 hitting percentage, but still held Temple to .157. Saint Louis fought to the wire, but dropped the second set 25-27. Temple's Gabrielle Matautia had 10 kills in each of the first two sets and finished with 32 kills in the match.

Freshman Anna Church highlighted the third set, leading the Bills on a 7-0 run midway through the set. Her serving helped turn a 6-7 deficit to a 13-7 lead. Church had her 24th service ace of the season during the run. Saint Louis played tough defense and held Temple to a -.077 hitting percentage in the set. The Billikens won the set 25-15.

The Owls answered back to win the fourth set 25-21. Despite winning the set, the Owls were again held below a .200 hitting percentage for the fourth consecutive set.

In the fifth and final set, the Owls opened with a 5-1 run. The Bills fought back but the comeback fell short as SLU drops the final set 13-15.

The reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, freshman Megan Gilbert, had a great game, notching 14 kills without an error and hitting .452 in the match. In her last five matches, Gilbert is hitting .436 with 56 kills and only five errors.

Saint Louis will return to action tomorrow, Nov. 3 at 5:30 when they take on the La Salle Explorers. Billiken fans who purchase admission to the men's basketball game at 2 p.m. will receive free admission to the volleyball game. Prior to the start of the match, head coach Kent Miller and his staff will honor the 2012 volleyball senior class.
