Men's Swimming Has Strong Showing at IUPUI
INDIANAPOLIS - Freshman Brendan Hulseman (Evanston, Ill.) won two individual events and a relay to help the Saint Louis men's swimming and diving team earn two wins in Indianapolis. The women's team also picked up two wins, but were defeated by host school IUPUI.
Hulseman had the best meet of his collegiate career, winning the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.83), 100-yard freestyle (47.53) and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:13.23/47.43 second leg). Sophomore Stephen Hansen (Omaha, Neb.) had a terrific meet in his own right, winning both the 100-yard (59.60) and 200-yard (2:15.21) breaststroke events. Hansen also helped Saint Louis win the 200-yard medley relay, with Patrick May, Hansen, Will Butzke and Zack Billingsley touching the wall at 1:36.01. Other members of the 200-yard medley won championships as well. May won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.91. and Billingsley the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.35.
The Billiken men had at least one swimmer medal in every swimming event at the meet.
For the women, senior Taylor Streid (Peoria, Ill.) and sophomore Morgan Peterson (Bentonville, Ark.) led the team to two wins. Streid won the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall at 1:55.30, a new season-best for SLU and the fifth-fastest time in the Atlantic 10 this season. She also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.38, but set a team-season-best by more than four seconds. Peterson won the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall at 2:10.64. She also placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.91, the fastest time for SLU this season and the tenth-fastest time in the A-10.
The Billikens return to action on Sat., Jan. 19, when they compete in the first home meet of the season. The Bills will take on William Jewell at 2:30 p.m. at the Simon Rec Center.
