ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis softball opened conference play with a 1-1 record after splitting a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure. The Billikens dropped a tough contest in game one, 4-3 in nine innings. They then bounced back for a huge 8-2 win in the second game. SLU is now 11-12 overall.
The Billikens battled throughout game one. St. Bonaventure opened scoring in the fourth inning with a three-run frame. In the bottom of the inning, SLU responded with two runs of their own on a Kelsey Biggs two-run home run to left field, her first of the season. The Billikens tied the game in the fifth on a Alyson Brand RBI single to centerfield. It was 3-3 through five innings
Both teams struggled to score, but a leadoff triple for the Bonnies in the ninth put the winning run on third with no outs. The run scored in the next at bat.
In the second game, the Billikens looked to even the series. St. Bonaventure scored first in the fourth inning with two runs, but the Bills answered in the bottom of the frame with an RBI double from Brand, an RBI single from Biggs and an RBI single from Laney Kneib. Through four, the Billikens held a 3-2 lead.
A huge six inning from Saint Louis closed the door on the contest. Kneib drew a bases loaded walk to score the fourth SLU run and keep the bases loaded with no one out. After two force outs at home, Lindsay Friedman came in to pinch hit with the bases loaded and two away. She delivered with a pinch-hit grand slam to bring the Billiken lead to 8-2. The long ball was the fourth of the year for Freidman.
The Bills are back in action on Wednesday, March 27, when they host UT Martin in a double header at the Billiken Sports Center. First pitch will be at 3:00 p.m.
