CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Saint Louis won the doubles point, but Temple answered with four singles victories and defeated the Billikens 4-1 Thursday afternoon in an Atlantic 10 Conference Women’s Tennis Championship first-round match at Boar’s Head Sports Club.

The Billikens, seeded eighth, conclude their season with a 12-8 record. Ninth-seeded Temple (10-13) advances to Friday’s quarterfinals to face top-seeded VCU.

Brooke Urzendowski and Madison Cook defeated Ama Osei and Carly Bohman 8-4 at No. 2, while Stephanie Hollis and Mia Elmore downed Jordan Batey and Alicia Doms 8-6 at No. 1 to give Saint Louis the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Maria Toro and Natalia Yacaman trailed Yana Mavrina and Rebecca Breland 7-5 at No. 3 when Hollis and Elmore’s victory clinched the point.

Osei evened the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Toro at No. 5 singles, and Batey toppled Elmore 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to give Temple the lead. At No. 3, Mavrina came from behind to beat Urzendowski 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3, and Breland’s 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) victory over Cook at No. 4 gave the contest to the Owls.

Two singles matches were unfinished. At No. 1, Hollis dropped the first set 7-5 to Doms but pulled even with a 6-3 win in the second set. Bohman and Yacaman were knotted 5-5 in the third set at No. 6 after Bohman captured the first set 6-3 and Yacaman bounced back for a 6-4 triumph in the second.
