ST. LOUIS - The Saint Louis volleyball team started the Comfort Inn Innvitational off with a bang, defeating host Morehead State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-15). It is the first sweep of the season for SLU as the Billikens rise to 2-2 on the year.
Megan Gilbert led the Bills in the first set, notching five kills with only one error on seven attempts for a .571 hitting percentage. She also added two block defensively. Freshman Danielle Rygelski added four kills of her own in the set.
The second set had the closest score of the match at 25-20, but SLU was dominant on offense and defense. The Billikens hit .333 and held the Eagles to a .000 hitting percentage in the set. The freshman duo of Rygelski and Mallory Dillon continued to impress as Rygelski had five kills and Dillon tallied six.
Rygelski saved the best for last, recording six kills in the final set. She finished with a match-best 15 kills. Gilbert, Dillon and Jessica Jendryk each added two kills to seal the sweep for SLU.
Rygelski finished with 15 kills and a . 367 attack percentage. Gilbert had eight kills, four blocks and hit . 333 at the net. Dillon narrowly missed a double-double with 11 kills and nine digs.
The Bills return to action tomorrow, Sept. 7 with a twinbill. Saint Louis will take on Montana State at 10 a.m. and IUPUI at 3:30 p.m. to wrap up the Innvitational.
