•The Saint Louis softball team experienced a rough opening day of the Tiger Classic on Friday, falling to Eastern Kentucky 4-2 and host team Memphis 4-3 in 13 innings.
•The Billikens slipped to 11-8 on the season.
GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Eastern Kentucky scored three runs, two of them unearned, in the bottom of the first inning.
•The Colonels added another unearned tally in the third.
•The Billikens got on the board in the sixth when Kaylyn Breitbach delivered a pinch-hit RBI single with two outs.
•Three walks loaded the bases in the SLU seventh. With two away, Hailey Weavers was hit by a pitch to make it a 4-2 game, but that ended the Billikens’ scoring.
GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Kaylea Chappelle allowed just one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out three. Chappelle also collected two singles.
•Emma Buckles had two hits, including a double.
•Weavers registered a single.
GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•The Billikens took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on Allie Macfarlane’s two-run double.
•Memphis plated a run in its half of the first.
•Saint Louis doubled its lead in the third when Alex Nickel scored on a double steal.
•Memphis answered with a run in the bottom of the third and scored the tying run in the sixth.
•Chappelle, who relieved starter Maddie Baalman in the seventh, worked out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the eighth and stranded two more runners in the 10th.
•The Tigers scored the winning run on a squeeze bunt.
GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Nickel had three hits, including a double.
•Macfarlane doubled twice.
•Mackenzie Lawson collected a double.
UP NEXT•The Billikens conclude play in the Tiger Classic on Saturday, taking on Memphis at 11 a.m. and Eastern Kentucky at 1 p.m.
