ORLANDO, Fla. – Verginie Tchakarova posted a victory at No. 3 singles, but fifth-seeded Saint Louis was eliminated from the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Tennis Championship by top-seeded VCU, 4-1, in the semifinals Saturday at the USTA National Campus.
The Billikens finished with a 16-8 record. VCU (16-8) aims for its fifth consecutive A-10 title when it meets No. 2 Massachusetts in Sunday's final.
Tchakarova's 6-1, 6-1 drubbing of Magda Aubets tied the match 1-1 after VCU captured the doubles point.The Rams took a 3-1 lead with wins at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. The Billikens were still very much alive, however, as the Nos. 5 and 6 singles contests were in a third set and the No. 4 match was about to begin a third set. But VCU clinched the match with a narrow victory at No. 5.
