ST. LOUIS – The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced that the Saint Louis University men’s and women’s track and field squads have once again been named 2017 Division I All-Academic Teams.

The women’s program has a cumulative GPA of 3.53, which is tied for 20th in the nation. The men’s program has a 3.41 GPA, which ranks 11th nationally.

In addition, sophomore Ann Harlos earned a spot on the USTFCCCA women’s All-Academic Team. A biomedical engineering major, Harlos qualified for the 2017 NCAA West Preliminary Round in the 400-meter hurdles and maintains above a 3.25 GPA, the minimum GPA required for consideration for the All-Academic Team.

These academic awards cap another highly productive year for the Billikens’ cross country and track and field programs. The season began with the men’s and women’s teams winning their season-opening meet, the Forest Park XC Festival, which was held in St. Louis. The men’s cross country team placed a program-high three runners on the All-Conference team as SLU finished third at the Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, its best finish ever.

The success carried over into the winter, as the men’s indoor track and field team turned in a program-high fourth-place finish at the A-10 Championships while having five Billikens earn medals. In addition, the women’s 4x800-meter relay earned bronze at the A-10 Championship.

During the outdoor track and field season, the men’s team finished fourth in the A-10 meet, its best showing ever, while breaking the school record with 75 points. Six Billikens earned medals. On the women’s side, Harlos was the A-10 runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles.

Manuel De Backer became the first Billiken in school history to earn All-Conference accolades in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. He competed at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, competing in the 10,000 meters.

The cross country season begins Friday, Sept. 8, at the Forest Park XC Festival in St. Louis. For the complete 2017 cross country schedule, click here.
