The 2018 campaign will be the first season in a Billiken uniform for assistant coach Joey Hawkins.
Hawkins joined the Billikens in the fall of 2017 from Jefferson College in Hillsboro, Missouri, where he was the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach. With the Vikings, he handled the recruiting and developed the offensive and infield strategies. In addition, Hawkins helped coordinate class schedules and practice times and worked to maintain and organize the baseball facilities.
Hawkins was a four-year letterwinner for Missouri State as a shortstop from 2011-15. With the Bears, he was captain of the 2015 team that set a record for wins. Known as a defensive stalwart, Hawkins holds MSU records in assists and fielding percentage and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2015. In high school, Hawkins competed with the Canadian Junior National Team.
Hawkins was drafted twice in his career: after high school (42nd round, Kansas City Royals) and after college (40th round, St. Louis Cardinals). He played in the Cardinals' organization for two years, reaching AA ball with the Springfield Cardinals.
