The 2018 starting staff featured two, 10-game winners and a nine game winner. Of those, Miller Hogan became the highest draft pick in team history when he was selected in the sixth round (180 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. Schierholz came to SLU from Miami (Ohio), where he served as the volunteer assistant for the 2017 season. He worked with the pitching staff and outfielders for the RedHawks. On game days, Schierholz served the Redhawks first base coach. As a part of the Miami staff, Schierholz assisted with on-campus recruiting while also working as the camp director.

Prior to Miami, Schierholz was an assistant coach at Jefferson College for the 2016 season. He helped the Vikings to a 41-18 record and a top-25 national ranking. Schierholz helped develop the pitching staff which included two pitchers who were ranked as top-500 MLB draft prospects. Overall, Schierholz was instrumental in the development of 21 athletes who moved on to 4-year institutions for the 2016-17 school year.

Schierholz was a pitcher at Butler University and Miami (Ohio) University. He pitched for the Butler Bulldog baseball team from 2011-14, leading the Bulldogs in ERA, appearances, wins and batting average against in 2014. Schierholz moved on to Miami (Ohio) in 2015 as a graduate transfer, where he led the team in ERA, appearances, saves and batting average against. He was also a quarterback on the Butler football team from 2010-12.

After Schierholz’s collegiate playing career, he went on to play professionally for the River City Rascals. He posted a team-best 2.67 ERA over 44 appearances for the Rascals in his rookie campaign in 2015. In two seasons, Schierholz ended his career with an 8-3 record and a 2.96 ERA in 85 appearances for the Rascals.
