NEWPORT, Rhode Island – With a heavy dose of seniors on the 2018 roster, the Saint Louis Billikens Baseball squad was ranked first in the Atlantic 10 preseason poll, released earlier Wednesday morning.
Saint Louis finished the 2017 campaign with a 35-22 overall mark and will return several key players including catcher James Morisano and starting pitcher Miller Hogan. While Hogan will look to improve on an outstanding sophomore season, Morisano leads a group of 10 seniors that are highly regarded nationally and could lead a special season under the Arch.
The Billikens received six first-place votes in the poll, three more than the No. 2-ranked team, Virginia Commonwealth. The Rams were a consistent force in the A-10 a year ago and finished the year with a 21-7 conference mark and were the runner-up for the Atlantic 10 Championship in 2017.
Rounding-out the top three was Rhode Island. The third-ranked Rams received two first place votes, one of four teams to get votes for the top spot. The Billikens knocked the Rams out of the A-10 Championship in the consolation semifinal.
The defending A-10 Champion Davidson earned two first-place votes and fifth place in the poll. A roller-coaster ride of a post-season helped the Wildcats win the conference title, a regional victory over No. 2-ranked North Carolina, and a berth to the super-regional.
“I’d say the parity in the A-10 is quite evident,” said Billikens’ Head Coach Darin Hendrickson. “I truly feel that there are five to six teams that could win this league. It is a testament to the coaches who work at this daily and have made our league better as a whole.”
