ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University incoming freshman guard Ingvi Gudmundsson will represent his home country of Iceland at the FIBA U20 European Championship, which will take place this month in Chemnitz, Germany.

Iceland begins the tournament July 14 against Serbia at 11 a.m. (CT). Iceland is in Group D, which also includes Italy and Sweden. The daily schedule of the FIBA U20 European Championship can be found at http://www.fiba.basketball/europe/u20/2018/games.

"I have worked hard this summer preparing for this tournament, both in the weight room and on the basketball court," Gudmundsson said. "Playing seven games in ten days against the best players in Europe in my age group will help me improve as a basketball player. This will be a great experience and will hopefully better prepare me for the upcoming season at SLU."

Gudmundsson, who in April signed an NLI to attend Saint Louis University, has previous international experience. Last year, he played on the Iceland team that competed in Greece during the FIBA U20 European Championship. In 2016, Gudmundsson played for Iceland in the FIBA U18 European Championship B Division in Macedonia.

"I'm very excited about arriving at SLU in August and finally being able to work with my teammates and coaches," Gudmundsson said. "I look forward being a part of SLU basketball and believe we are capable of having a great season with hard work and unity, on and off the court."

In addition to his international experience, Gudmundsson competes with the Grindavik basketball club, which plays in the Icelandic Domino's League, the top league in Iceland. He is coming off a season in which he played all 25 games and averaged 10.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg and 3.5 apg. Gudmundsson shot 51.6 percent (47-91) from the field and 80 percent (32-40) from the free-throw line. His brother, Jon Axel, is a member of the Davidson men's basketball team.
