CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois upended Saint Louis 61-56 Wednesday night at SIU Arena in Carbondale, Illinois.
The Billikens slip to 6-2 with the loss, while Southern Illinois improves to 6-3.
Sophomore forward Hasahn French led the Billikens with 13 points and finished a rebound shy of a double-double with nine boards. Sophomore guard Jordan Goodwin went for 12 points, while freshman forward Carte'Are Gordon posted 11 points.
Senior guard Javon Bess, who did not practice in the days leading up to the game after suffering an ankle injury versus Butler, gathered a game-high 15 rebounds and dished out a game-high six assists.
Sean Lloyd and Armon Fletcher led SIU with 13 points apiece.
The Billikens were hampered by 33.3 percent shooting from the field, a season low. SLU also turned the ball over 16 times and hit just 23 percent from the arc.
Despite that, the Billikens had a chance in the final minute. Freshman guard Demarius Jacobs hit a trey to pull the Billikens within four with 58 seconds to go. SIU hit a pair of free throws, then senior guard Tramaine Isabell Jr. scored on a layup to pull SLU to within four again. Once again, Southern Illinois hit its free throws, and Goodwin buried a jumper as SLU trailed 60-56 with 32 seconds remaining.
SIU would miss its next four free throws, but the Billikens were unable to capitalize on the other end. Fletcher hit a free throw with five seconds remaining to give SIU a five-point lead, and the Salukis escaped with the home victory.
Saint Louis is next in action Sunday when it hosts Oregon State at Chaifetz Arena. Game time is 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
