SETTING THE SCENE
-- Saint Louis hosts Massachusetts at Chaifetz Arena on Wednesday night. Game time is 8 p.m.
-- The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. Tom McCarthy and Dan Dickau are on the call.

THINGS TO KNOW
-- The Billikens are coming off a 60-53 win against Rhode Island in their A-10 opener. With a win against UMass, SLU could get to 2-0 in league play for the first time since 2014.
-- Senior guard Javon Bess is the reigning Atlantic 10 Conference co-Player of the Week. He tied a career high with 24 points in the win against Rhode Island and once against contributed to the Billikens’ shutdown defensive effort.
-- Bess has led the Billikens in scoring in six straight games and eight of the last nine. For the year, he leads the Bills in scoring (16.1 ppg; 10th in A-10) and 3-pointers made (30). He is second on the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg; t-6th in A-10).
-- Sophomore guard Jordan Goodwin averages 10.0 ppg and leads SLU in assists (43) and steals (32). He also pulls down 6.3 rpg.
-- Senior guard Tramaine Isabell Jr. is second on the Billikens in scoring with 12.0 ppg. He registered his 1,000th career point on Dec. 22 against Florida State.
-- Sophomore forward Hasahn French has registered back-to-back double-doubles. He scores 7.1 ppg and leads the Billikens and is third in the A-10 with 7.9 rpg. Senior forward D.J. Foreman turns in 6.0 ppg.
-- Freshman guard Fred Thatch Jr. scores 4.4 ppg and has been productive on the defensive end.
-- Saint Louis is 13 in the NCAA in adjusted defensive efficiency at kenpom.com. The Billikens lead the A-10 in scoring defense, yielding 62.6 ppg.
ABOUT THE MINUTEMEN
-- UMass enters Wednesday’s game 7-7 overall and 0-1 in league play. The Minutemen dropped their A-10 opener 69-60 against La Salle.
-- The Minutemen were picked eighth in the A-10 preseason poll. Last season, UMass went 13-20 and finished 13th in the league standings.
-- UMass features one of the A-10’s top scorers, guard Luwane Pipkins, who is second in the league with 19.6 ppg. He was the A-10’s top scorer last season with 21.2 ppg. Pipkins also leads UMass in assists (80) and steals (22).
-- Center Rashaan Holloway leads the A-10 in field goal percentage (.747, 59-of-79). He also brings down a team-high 5.6 rpg.
-- Forward Jonathan Laurent is second on the team in scoring with 11.8 ppg. He leads the A-10 in 3-point field goal percentage (.500, 19-38).
-- Head coach Matt McCall is in his second season at UMass. He spent the previous two seasons as head coach at Chattanooga, posting a 48-18 record.
-- SLU leads the all-time series 12-5. Last season, the Billikens defeated the Minutemen 66-47. Hasahn French and Jordan Goodwin registered double-doubles for the Billikens.
